The Fuertegoat was originally born in 1995
and has since then rapidly grown to become the official symbol of the island of Fuerteventura.
Today it is as well known as the kangaroo is in Australia or the reindeer in Sweden.

In January 2008 the government of the island officially started counting and registering the goats,
implementing a unique microchip into each one of them.
Today, there are about 40,000 goats on the island.
The long-believed rumour of the existence of more goats than inhabitants on the island is therefore not valid
(Fuerteventura has a population of 80,000 people).
Back in 1991 though, only 37,000 people lived on the island,
and it is quite possible that the rumour was then true.
Reality is though that the goat has always been an important element of the culture and economy of the island.
Even the island’s capital was long called officially “Puerto Cabras” (Port Goat).
It only received its current name, Puerto del Rosario, in the late seventies. Recently,
the first museum dedicated entirely to the island’s famous goat cheese opened in the island’s capital.
